Home Security

Keys

It is essential to protect the keys, which give access to your home. No matter how strong your doors or window bars may be, if you give a key to someone else (i.e. domestic help), you have forfeited your protection. So:

• If you give your keys to your domestic help, it must be a considered decision on your part.

• Do not leave spare keys in your home unprotected or near to your front door. Remember they can easily be taken and copied.

• Do not tag your keys with your name and address.

• If you think that keys to your home have been compromised, get the locks changed!

Doors and Windows

When at home:

• Keep outer doors locked (use bolts if you have them) and only open windows in rooms you are currently occupying.

• Close and secure windows in other rooms that are accessible from outside.

• Do not leave keys in locks.

• Check that all doors and windows are secure before going to bed.

• Close all curtains or blinds when internal lights are on.

Grounds

• Ensure garages and any outbuildings are always locked.

• Ensure that any security lighting is working and is effective.

• Do not leave ladders, garden tools, etc, out and accessible to intruders.

• Keep dustbins in an enclosed yard or area.

Callers

When someone you were not expecting calls on you:

• Use the safety chain and spy-hole (if fitted) to identify the caller.

• Positively identify the caller before opening the door.

• Do not automatically assume that a caller in uniform is who he/she claims to be. Always check his/her identity first.

• Ensure that all your domestic staff and any visitors who are staying with you follow the same precautions.

• Treat late callers, whether known or unknown, with great suspicion.

Tradesmen

If tradesmen or workmen call:

• Treat as callers (above) and ask to see identification.

• Do not accept any unexpected deliveries without question.

• If you suspect anything suspicious, then you must inform your security officer immediately.

Communications

Have:

• Working land line
• Working radio
• Working satellite communications, if possible
• Nearby other expatriate or trusted local
